GVW Volunteer Fire Department Chief Phil Napier said a call came in about 6:05 am from Kent's Korner at 301 Robert M. Bell Parkway reporting a gas smell. Responders arrived to a large natural gas release and blocked sections of the bypass and Trolley Line Road to secure the area.

Hailey Eugene Prescott, 45, was captured in Lexington County after failing to surrender for a four year sentence for pinning an eight week old puppy to a wall with a knife. He claimed the animal was grimacing and diverting pain, but the jury rejected his story and he was sentenced to one year in jail and one year of probation with two days to settle affairs before reporting to prison.
Senate leaders confirm Strom Thurmond collapsed on the floor from dehydration while feeling weak after a vote. His wife Nancy, not living with him since 1991, says he is in good condition and was taken to Walter Reed as a precaution. The family stresses the incident was blown out of proportion and notes his doctors reported stable vital signs.
Aiken County schools may give bonuses to all staff including principals if they meet new academic excellence criteria starting 2002 03. The board will set criteria and locate funding next year while evaluating a merit pay concept tied to performance. Board chair Dr John Bradley says rewards aim to recognize good performance.
