Washington reports that a hostage held by Iranian sympathizers in Lebanon could be freed imminently. Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said officials received word from a third regional government, with State Department officials noting positive signals and optimism despite prior dashed hopes.
The League of Women Voters says it will withdraw as sponsor of the presidential debate in Los Angeles later this month. The second Bush Dukakis confrontation is in doubt as the league plans a news conference to announce the decision. No immediate campaign reaction was available.

A Media General Associated Press poll of 1125 adults shows 70 percent believe illegal payoffs are common in federal government and 69 percent say the government is poorly managed. Fewer than half regard the government as honest, with high concern across all demographics about ethics and payoffs in Pentagon contracts.
