The 10th annual Aiken Jaycees County Fair starts at 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting led by officials and Miss South Carolina Diane Toole. Organizers expect up to 35 000 attendees this week as gates stay open 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 1 p.m. on weekend days with 75 cent admission and carload pricing.
Joann Cook DePriest of Aiken earned a wall hanging selected for the Blind Art Show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She and husband Edwin travel this week for the opening and artists reception.
Raymond W. Mizell, area rehabilitation supervisor, told the Rotary of Aiken Club that South Carolina tops the nation for returning handicapped people to work. He noted 12,120 statewide reentries last year and 760 in Aiken County, as he promoted the upcoming Salute to the Handicapped event at USC Aiken. Teres a Dicks of North Augusta received a standing ovation.
Backers of college tuition tax credits face a veto threat as Sen and House Conferees draft a compromise to fit the credits into a general tax cut bill. Califano says the plan remains ineffective and inequitable and would not satisfy the administration. Carter favors expanding federal grant programs instead.

President Carter and Rosalynn attended the Redskins 9 to 5 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in a nationally televised NFL regular season game. Carter told cheering Washington fans “Great game” as he greeted supporters near his motorcade, becoming only the second sitting president to attend a regular season NFL game.
Aiken High School announces its annual homecoming parade sponsored by the student council set for tomorrow at 5 p.m. on Laurens Street. The Hornets with a 5-0 record will meet Irma in Friday night’s homecoming game.
Jackson town councill debated a proposed police and fire department headquarters. Councilman J W McIver urged a detailed committee study while Mayor Helms referred the matter to the fire protection committee. He noted hilltop site hinders radio and fire response and a steep grade challenges a new pump truck as traffic could block emergency access.

An accessory after the fact charge against Michael Wilson of Aiken was dismissed after a review found insufficient evidence to proceed. He was accused in the 1977 murder case of Joyce M. Heining, a 19 year old Augusta woman found shot near I 20 in Lexington County. No further action will be taken.
