Rail service revival efforts in SC and NC counties
Officials from Horry and Marion counties in South Carolina and Columbus County in North Carolina form a committee to restore rail service after Carolina Southern Railroad ceased operations in August 2011. The line spans 93 miles. repairs on seven bridges have cost about 400000 dollars with four bridges remaining.

Cynthia Wilson, superintendent of Orangeburg Consolidated School District 5, led forty volunteers door to door to urge 35 absent students to return. The effort, started two years ago, offers evening or online courses to help students finish their education or pursue a GED. Two absent middle school students were among those contacted.
