A youth gang called the Baby Gorillas, ages 11 to 20, is accused of terrorizing Greendale in New Ellenton. Police report 10 to 15 members jumped a man earlier this month and many carry guns. Residents fear naming them.
The Aiken Ki Mi Club toured the wetlands at Rye Patch on a sunny autumn day led by city horticulturist Brian Woodward. He describes the site as formerly overgrown with wisteria and underbrush and notes a major ditch carried runoff from Mead Avenue and Whiskey Road into Hitchcock Woods, bringing oil and dirt that could harm trees. The project funds followed federal storm water treatment requirements, transforming the area into a wetlands system described as a series of Your Bonds.
The Savannah River Site marks a bittersweet milestone as over 2,600 employees retire or leave, amid a broader DOE and Westinghouse workforce reduction. US Representative Butler Derrick of South Carolina backs federal aid for school security and a one year expulsion for weapon offenses on school grounds. The bill offers a $100 million grant and would cut federal funds to noncomplying schools. Aiken County Superintendent Dr. Joseph R. Brooks said the district already has such a policy in the Code of Student Conduct and warned funding stability would be a concern.
