A Food and Drug Administration task force found no link between sugar and disease beyond tooth decay. The panel said there is no conclusive evidence that sugars pose a general hazard at current consumption levels, estimated at about 130 pounds per person annually, plus others with sugar substitutes.
Washington AP The FDA approved expanded AZT trial rules to classify the drug as a treatment IND enabling thousands of AIDS patients to access the medicine. The move widens eligibility for an experimental therapy thought to prolong life and ease symptoms in some patients with AIDS.

He noted the dissident Yuri Orlov’s release as part of a broader thaw in Soviet American relations.

Larry Wayne Scotten Jr., 23, of Graniteville, was found hanged in his Aiken County Detention Center cell and died at 11:17 p.m. at HCA Aiken Regional Medical Center after being discovered at 10:39 p.m. Tuesday. Scotten, held since Sept. 16 on burglary and grand larceny charges, awaited a court date as autopsy plans were set at MUSC. The investigation by the Aiken County Sheriff's Department and coroner continues.
