The hurricane Gladys moves across the Atlantic toward the northern Bahamian islands with 100 mph winds. Forecasters say the Eastern Seaboard may feel its impact in two days as Gladys slows and possibly turns north.
An Indonesian Meteorological Department bulletin reports a 5.8 magnitude quake centered off Bengkulu on Sumatra's southern coast about 300 miles northwest of Jakarta with no immediate casualties. The U S Geological Survey earlier recorded 7.0 force, warning of possible widespread heavy damage. event occurred around 11:30 p m EDT Tuesday or 10:30 a m Sumatra time.
