In Jackson Tennessee two men attempted a robbery at a convenience store. Clerk Aleshia Melton drew a foot long machete forcing the men to flee. Michael E. Rogers, 27, of Jackson was later arrested on armed robbery charges.

At H Odell Weeks Center a seven hour session attracted 56 speakers with 42 percent backing the proposed Idaho and Savannah River production reactors. Further hearings are planned in Augusta Georgia.
Washington reports the Savannah River Plant will not resume production until at least spring or summer due to safety concerns. Energy Secretary Herrington says readiness depends on total safety. Environmental groups press for a full environmental impact study before any restart.
A sailor was killed and another injured when an aircraft gun on the USS Nimitz fired accidentally during maintenance in the Persian Gulf. Six aircraft on deck were damaged as firefighters contained the blaze within about 20 minutes. The incident occurred around 2 50 a.m. and an investigation began.
George Mitchell, 55, of Maine, was elected by Senate Democrats as the new majority leader defeating Daniel Inouye and Bennett Johnston. He pledged a cautious agenda addressing the federal deficit health care day care and the environment and planned to meet with Republican leader Bob Dole.
The U N General Assembly committee overwhelmingly denounced the U S refusal to grant a visa to Yasser Arafat. The Sixth Committee’s 121 to 2 vote urged issuance of a visa so Arafat can address the assembly. Britain abstained.
