Longevity Linked to Twins Social Ties and Shared Habits
UC Berkeley biologist Malcolm Zaretsky reports from the Journal of Gerontology that identical twins living in monthly contact show greater longevity, while fraternal twins’ lifespans are less influenced by contact. Exercise and lower smoking among identical twins may boost this effect. one twin’s death strongly affects the other's longevity. Stanford gerontologist Walter M. Bortz notes social environment often outweighs genetics, and the question remains how people choose to live.
