Federal mediators called a fresh session between the United Mine Workers and the Bituminous Coal Operators Association as a possible strike looms. UMW President Arnold Miller plans to brief the union’s bargaining council later, with the contract set to expire at 12 01 a.m. December 6 affecting about 130 mining companies.
The National Weather Service forecasts a colder than normal trend for northern and central regions this winter with a 65 percent chance in the far north. Central areas and the Mississippi Delta have a 50-50 chance, while the Southwest and Southeast lean warmer at 65 percent. Odds against a repeat of last winter’s severe conditions remain at 30 to 1.
The American Heart Association renews its anti smoking campaign with a new president who quit last year and a retiring president still mildly hooked. Dr Harriet P Dustan of the University of Alabama leaves the presidency Friday after admitting she smokes a little. Her successor Dr W Gerald Austen of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston quit smoking in 1976 and warns that smoking raises lung complication risks after surgery and doubles mortality for heavy smokers.
Actor Cyril Ritchard is reported to be stable though still critical in the coronary unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after slipping into a coma. The 78 year old, famed for his Captain Hook role in Peter Pan, had been unstable since losing consciousness Monday and was on a ventilating system.
The forecast predicts a 30 percent chance of rain tonight and 70 percent showers tomorrow in the Aiken area. Temperatures rise to the lower 70s with tonight’s low in the 50s. An extended outlook calls for scattered showers Thursday through Saturday.

Aiken County former clerk of court Cleo J. Scott requests a parole hearing after a six month sentence for official misconduct. Parole Board director Grady Wallace confirms the request. she is eligible on December 24 after serving one third of her term.
Aiken County files official answer to suit by Aiken County School Board over tax funding for schools. County Attorney Williams argues no justiciable issue exists and declaratory relief is improper. The suit challenges delegation of tax levy powers and cites separation of powers.
CAIRO AP. Israel formally agrees to join a three nation Cairo conference with Egypt and the United States to prepare for a Geneva peace conference with the Arabs. Syria, Jordan, and the PLO say they will not attend. the United States signals participation but final representation undecided.
Washington officials report the Carter Administration plans to join a preliminary Middle East conference in Egypt this weekend. Representation level remains undecided, with Cyrus Vance not attending. Prospective U S delegates include Phillip Habib and Alfred Atherton as talks aim to prep a reconvened Geneva Conference for a comprehensive Arab Israeli settlement.
Robert P. Timmerman president of ATMI told New York Board of Trade that a 50 percent textile tariff cut discussed in Geneva could trigger 2.2 million lost American jobs by 1985. He cited ATMI's Commerce Department report and noted ripple effects in communities.
