Newcomers Club hears from Elk Eagle Originals owner
The October 2015 meeting of the Aiken Newcomers Club featured Ron Colombe, owner of Elk Eagle Originals on Laurens Street and author of Silent Shouting Quiet War. He spoke on his Lakota heritage, Native American history, and the varied challenges on reservations. He noted reservations like Rosebud and Pine Ridge struggle with poverty and addiction while explaining why Indians were called Indians and how Columbus’s journals reflected perceptions. Colombe cited a moving story of Lopez Lemon, the Sudanese lost boy turned Olympian, and reflected on views of illegality in the U S. He commented on casino benefits to Cherokee and Seminole families and quipped that leaving the Dakotas was due to cold.
