MOX project cost estimates and public report delay
DOE commissioned analysis estimated MOX disposal would require 800 million to 1 billion dollars annually to be viable, a figure confirmed by Moniz who doubts Congress will fund it. Part 2 of the Aerospace study, focusing on MOX alternatives, remains unreleased to the public while Congress appropriations cap analysis of alternatives at no more than 5 million in the next fiscal year. The MOX program employs 2,000 workers under a nonproliferation pact with Russia to dispose of 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium each.
