South Carolina may require fowl tags for farm birds
State wildlife officials propose tagging ducks and quail raised on farms to be released in the wild to track disease origins amid avian flu concerns. Critics call it costly and unnecessary for producers. Georgetown County producer Jim Hills estimates tagging could cost at least 75000 dollars annually. Scientists warn avian influenza could mutate and spread to humans, with over 60 deaths linked to an Asian strain.

Cars kill black bears on South Carolina highways
Coastal highways have killed more black bears this year than the prior two combined. Through October 24 bears were confirmed dead, with new bypasses and parkways intruding into habitat. DNA biologists warn development is fragmenting a coastal population of 200 to 300 bears, few miles from Myrtle Beach.
