Public hearings on Savannah River Plant reactor plan set

Public hearings on the Savannah River Plant proposed production reactor will run from 10 a.m. to p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow at Odell Weeks Recreation Center, 1700 Whiskey Road. DOE will use the hearings to prepare an environmental impact statement for the reactor planned to open around 2000.

Georgia Manhunt Continues for Jail Escapee Mathis

Clif ford Junior Mathis, 22, charged with killing a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent, escaped from McDuffie County jail after overpowering a guard during a return to his cell. Sheriff Swan said the unlocked dispatcher door aided the escape and that corrections will be reviewed. About 35-40 officers from GBI, state patrol, local departments searched the area for Mathis, who has ties across the country. he was being held for murder of Agent Robert M. Kirk in Thomson on Aug 29 and was captured Sept 4 after a five day manhunt.

Tornadoes kill five in North Carolina

Tornadoes ripped a Raleigh department store and damaged homes churches and apartments injuring about 50. Three deaths occurred in Wake County and two in Nash. The Kmart in northern Raleigh was flattened trapping a man who suffered a broken leg. Red Cross aid and looting precautions were underway as extensive damage spread across Wake Nash and Franklin counties.

DOE Changes Produce 45 New Jobs at Savannah River

DOE officials at the Savannah River Plant report about 45 new positions created by a high level reorganization aimed at boosting nuclear reactor safety. The restructuring, proposed in June, followed the August restart troubles at P-Reactor and two new assistant manager roles split from one.
