Three Palestinian hijackers released their hostages and walked off a Dutch KLM Boeing 747 in the eastern Mediterranean. U S Steel, the nation’s largest producer, announced a price increase effective January 1 by about 64 percent on half of its products including rods wire bars semifinished steel plate structurals tubular and railroad products. The hikes are described as cost justified and in line with government regulations. Other major steel firms did not immediately respond but are expected to follow. Overall the increases would average about 3 percent across U S Steel’s total line.
