GAO Faults NNSA MOX Handling at Savannah River Site
The GAO report criticizes NNSA guidance and cost estimates for the Savannah River Site MOX facility and the Waste Solidification Building, citing ongoing funding troubles and a history of cost overruns. The MOX program employs about 1,400 workers and is tied to a Russia nuclear materials disposition treaty. DOE estimates the program life cycle could exceed 30 billion dollars, with prior GAO findings of overrun. The report highlights a pattern of mismanagement since 1990 and ongoing high risk for fraud, waste, and mismanagement in major DOE contracts.
