Alligators Thrive in South Carolina Preserve Habitats
Riverbanks Zoological curator Scott Pfaff reports a thriving alligator community at Congaree Creek Heritage Preserve near Columbia. Two large males, about a dozen large females, and many juveniles inhabit the pits formed by an old Guignard brick quarry. Gators breed there year round, with younger males likely to disperse. adults are territorial. A two year survey tracked reptiles amphibians and fish with 200 workers using traps to capture and photograph turtles snakes and salamanders before release.
