Christmas Craft Show Comes to Aiken With 120 Crafters

Lisa Hall of Aiken Parks and Recreation says the 32nd Annual Christmas Craft Show will run Friday and Saturday at the H Odell Weeks Activities Center. About 120 crafters from the Southeast will offer handmade items from wood furniture to jewelry and ceramics. Proceeds from Saturday rides by Carolina Amusements benefit the Fun Funds scholarship program. Augusta mayoral runoff repeats four year cycle

Incumbent Bob Young narrowly wins re election in Augusta against former Mayor Ed McIntyre in a runoff. Young, 55, had drawn attention earlier for a glowing letter endorsing Fire Chief Ronnie Few, touching off investigations into Augusta Fire Department funding and leadership. McIntyre, 70, Augusta’s first Black mayor, cited inadequate leadership and blamed Young while vowing to promote female membership at Augusta National Golf Club.

South Carolina ranks third nationally in National Board Certification

More than 1,000 South Carolina teachers earned the National Board certification this year, boosting the state's total to 2,358 and moving from fifth to third place behind North Carolina and Florida. The goal is 5,000 certified teachers by 2005, with incentives including a 7500 dollar annual pay raise for a decade.
