Thanksgiving Day closings affect City of Aiken and Aiken County offices Thursday and Friday. Aiken Public Works will pick up today instead of Thursday. Local banks and post offices close Thursday with no mail delivery. Express mail still delivered. Aiken Standard offices closed but paper printed and delivered as usual.

Hopeland Gardens hosts Christmas In Hopelands from Dec 14 to 24 with nightly lighted walks from 69 p.m. and Christmas night reopening. Free to attend, donations welcomed. New attractions include a large train, carolers, animal additions to the manger scene. hot chocolate, cider and cookies served by volunteers at the Carriage House Museum.
Aiken County and North Augusta officials said permits for video poker will be withheld until zoning reviews finish, with Aiken County map changes due by January and North Augusta zoning map due in December. County and city actions aim to curb video poker amid state Supreme Court rulings and prior prohibitions on cash payouts.
Governor David Beasley urged moving the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina Statehouse to a memorial citing heritage while acknowledging divisive use. He aired the proposal on statewide TV and planned a follow up news conference with governors from both parties as critics condemned the move and linked the flag to racial violence.
