Tradition Lives On Blessing of the Hounds Held in Hitchcock Woods

The 78th Blessing of the Hounds took place at Memorial Gate in Hitchcock Woods with over 40 riders and about 200 on foot braving wet woods. Rev. Jeffrey Smith of All Saints Anglican Church led a traditional blessing for riders horses and the fox, as Sandy Cassatt of the Hounds spoke of community support and the intent to hunt the scent without killing. The ceremony recalls St. Hubert the patron saint of hunters and notes the stump plaque at Memorial Gate marking Hitchcock Woods history.

Valley Empty Stocking Fund aids local families this season

Volunteers in the Valley Empty Stocking Fund report rising need as some contributors seek aid rather than give. Last year the fund helped 243 families from Vaucluse to Storm Branch with $25,000, with Midland Valley High School providing a fifth. Donations are welcome by mail to Langley, and other local groups, including the Salvation Army and Aiken Jaycees, are running drives. For more information call 649-7052.
