In Husum Germany children used counterfeit two five and ten dollar bills wrapped in bubble gum to shop and receive change in marks. Police reported multiple incidents with youths paying with play money and getting mild reprimands.
Prague reports a special dollar quota allocated to buy panties abroad for shivering women. First shipments due before Christmas, with Yugoslavia as the main supplier and talks with other nations ongoing. Prace cites shortages from yarn and electricity, plus misplanning, while rumors point to Soviet wives buying stock.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew will depart Washington on December 26 with Mrs. Agnew for a three week tour of ten Asia and Pacific nations. He will attend the inauguration of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos in Manila on December 30 and then visit Nationalist China Thailand Nepal Afghanistan Malaysia Singapore Indonesia Australia and New Zealand to meet leaders and observe regional progress and problems. No trip to South Vietnam was noted.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff backed Nixon’s limit on chemical and germ weapons. He stated the U S will not be first to use killing chemicals reaffirming longstanding policy of restraint. Military leaders see biological weapons as limited by short shelf life and storage challenges.
AFL-CIO International Association of Machinists vice president William E. Winpisinger warned union leaders that a strike could trigger a nationwide railroad shutdown next week. He urged preparation for action as wage talks with the rail industry remain stalled under a 60 day no-strike provision, with potential strike set for December 3.
In Southboro Massachusetts police and Davis Tractor Co officials solved the case of a stolen $100,000 bright red truck and a mammoth 100 foot folded crane. The vehicle had been at the shop for minor repairs and was ready for pickup by the owner.
Army field hospital soldiers plan a 24 hour Thanksgiving Day fast to protest the war. Col Joseph Bellas says leaders face punishment for the fast and for publicizing it under new dissent guidelines issued by higher authorities.
South Carolinians begin a four day break as state offices close and many businesses shut on Thursday with usual reopen Friday. The State Highway Patrol warns motorists and reports 885 highway deaths so far this year. Thanksgiving travel brings fair mild weather and diverse sports events across the state including quail and deer hunts and college games. Spec 5 Willie Watkins of Sumter serves as parade grand marshal for Morris College.
The Aiken Community Thanksgiving Day Service hosts a 10 am service at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. M. B. Hudgall of St. John's United Methodist Church delivers the sermon titled Twelve Baskets Full. Sponsored by five churches with offerings to children’s homes.
Allied armor infantry and airborne units clash with North Vietnamese forces north of Saigon near a U S base camp. Twenty enemy soldiers die, one American is killed and nine wounded as air strikes and artillery pound enemy positions. South Vietnamese airborne company also claims 17 enemy dead following helicopter ground fire.
The Pentagon approves a 15000 reduction in overseas military personnel and shuts 19 consular posts 17 in the Western Hemisphere. Laird says civilian foreign-area jobs drop by about 3825 with estimated annual savings near 50 million. Major cuts hit the Pacific command with 10965 military spaces.
Johnny Earl Price a 28 year old escapee from Jackson Ga was captured by Richmond County authorities after hijacking a South Carolina Highway Patrol car near Augusta. Hill the patrolman said Price forced him into the Ford then hijacked the patrol car at gunpoint and fired at Hill who escaped unharmed. Price reportedly fled through several vehicles and was apprehended about 25 miles south of Augusta with two other men later identified as Haywood Moyer Jr and Garland OBrien though no charges yet against them.
Israeli fighter bombers attacked artillery positions across a three mile front east of the Jordan River cease fire line for four hours. Israel claimed all planes returned safely while Iraq said two jets were shot down.
