Salley's Chitlin Strut Started From One Idea Twenty Years Ago
Salley South Carolina built a festival from a single idea. In 1965 mayor Jack Able and radio figure Ben Dekle launched the Chitlin Strut after a West Columbia DJ inspired local fund raising. The event now draws 40 000 to 50 000 yearly, funds Christmas lights water pipes and hydrants, and earned national TV and magazine exposure. The festival begins with a Thursday talent show and Friday beauty pageant ahead of the Saturday parade and official kickoff.
