The Sixth Annual Salley Chitlin Strut opens with a 10 a.m. parade in Salley. Mayor Jack Able says Mrs. Sara Henderson of Columbia will prepare chitlins and other foods for plates priced at $1.50 each.
President Nixon phoned holiday greetings to Lyndon B. Johnson Britain's prime minister and governors of New York California and other leaders. He also spoke with Edward Heath in London about the India Pakistan crisis and plans to consult allied officials before visiting Peking and Moscow.
Hank Mann, longtime actor and purported last survivor of Mack Sennett’s Keystone Kops, died in South Pasadena California at Braewood Convalescent Hospital. He entered films in 1912 and appeared as a bowler hat police officer in many films and later character roles through 1960. His funeral services will be private and he is survived by his widow Dolly.
Police in Baltimore issue 50 special summonses to motorists with unlocked cars and visible valuables. The tickets resemble parking fines but carry a green holly border and a message urging drivers to lock cars and pocket keys. The actions aim to curb larcenies from automobiles during the holiday season.
Catherine Elizabeth Rhea, 17, of Rock Hill South Carolina, was named Queen Carrousel 26th and will reign over Charlotte's Carolinas Carrousel parade next Thanksgiving. She won over 32 other Carolina high school princesses in the 25th parade which drew thousands. Finland USA was the theme and was carried by 36 high school bands and dozens of floats.

Officials in Rahway New Jersey reclaim control of Rahway State Prison after a peaceful agreement ends a stoppage. The agreement restores order and resumes normal operations at the facility.
About 150 inmates held five hostages and two wings of Rahway State Prison for 24 hours in a bid for better medical care, better food, faster parole hearings, and end to alleged racism. Gov. Cahill oversaw talks as eight attorneys from the state public defender's office prepared to meet with prisoners. Hostages were released and inmates returned to cells with assurances of no reprisals while officials negotiate. Superintendent A. Samuel Vukcevich was treated for injuries at Rahway Hospital.
Mrs. Emily Weller Schwiezer Dows of 149 Fauburg Street NW Aiken died today at Aiken County Hospital. Widow of Raymond T. Schwiezer and of sportsman David Dows she left three children, was active in social charitable and political life, and past president of the Aiken County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Funeral 11 am Monday at St Thaddeus Episcopal Church. Burial private at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery North Tarrytown N Y. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Charles C Burke Jr and two sons Raymond J Schwiezer and Thomas Schwiezer.
A hijacker who claimed a bomb and demanded $200 000 bailed out from a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 near Woodland Washington after taking control mid flight from Portland to Seattle. He used the alias D B Cooper seen on the ticket and vanished with the money. The plane continued to Reno with crew and passengers left aboard.
A 25,000 man South Vietnamese assault into eastern Cambodia moved forward on its fifth day with a ranger thrust into Mimot rubber plantation. The operation marked the first sweep into Mimot in six months, a key staging area for attacks toward Saigon, while other units prepared along the border for further thrusts into Snuol. North Vietnamese forces reportedly pulled back from Mimot as South Vietnamese commanders warned of expected heavy fighting within a week. The offensive proceeded with minimal US helicopter support beyond reconnaissance and gunships.
Record snowfalls blocked traffic from the Northeast to the Mid Atlantic on Thanksgiving.
