The Aiken Standard will become an afternoon Monday through Friday paper starting in December after a study of local conditions and national patterns. The change aims to better serve subscribers and advertisers, allow for more thorough reading, and enable families to discuss daily issues together.

Dr Donald E Gatch a Beaufort County hunger and disease crusader was indicted on four drug law charges The charges allege personal drug use improper record keeping and dispensing without proper prescriptions The grand jury returned true bills and the maximum penalty cited is 642 years and 6500 dollars in fines or both
The New York stock market fell sharply in moderate trading as investors fretted over tight money and Vietnam. The Dow Jones average slid 8.78 to 814.35 by 1 p.m. and several key issues moved on the NYSE including AMK Corp and Beatrice Foods.
Air Force test pilot Maj. Ralph Mayton parachuted from a crashing 101 C jet near Piedmont after a malfunction during a test at the Ling-Tempco-Vaught plant in Greenville. The plane crashed in woods near Interstate 85. Mayton landed in a tree and was unharmed. Local resident William L. Anders assisted him to Greenville.
The Soviet Union launched its 311th Cosmos satellite into Earth orbit on Monday, part of the unmanned Cosmos program begun in 1962. Official wording gave no specific mission details beyond outer space exploration, with the series including weather and research satellites as well as tests of ships and weapons systems.
Dr John Bradley of Aiken County School District will discuss district programs at the Aiken County Mental Health Association meeting at 7 30 p m. Slides will illustrate the work of special programs and district staff including William Gallman assistant director of Kalmia Hill School will participate. The event is open to the public and aims to inform teachers and parents about services for county children.
The South Carolina GOP chair says Sen Hollings backed Judge Haynsworth for the Supreme Court only after learning he had presidential approval. Ray Harris rebuts Democratic leaders criticism of Nixon's role, noting opposition from NAACP and SC Labor Council and urging cross-state support for Haynsworth.
Apollo 12 crew Charles Conrad Richard Gordon and Alan Bean land in the South Pacific aboard USS Hornet after a 1 million mile mission. They are airlifted to the ship and begin a 10 day quarantine at the Mobile Quarantine Facility in Houston to prevent lunar germs.
North Vietnamese gunners firing on U S scout helicopters drew counterattacks that killed about 40 enemy personnel. The U S Command said three 12 7 mm antiaircraft guns were destroyed around Song Be in rubber plantations and jungle. One U S helicopter crewman was wounded. Fighting near Bu Prang Camp on the Cambodian border left 20 enemy dead.
City Council accepted the Election Commission report naming Dr James Suhrer Q Jutson Fulmer and Hastings Wyman as winners of the November 11 election. I M Hendrix administered the oath as three Republicans began a four year term. The council deferred a railroad crossing flagman ordinance after evidence showed eight accidents since 1957 were caused by adult drivers. It will consider flashing lights at crossings and approved second reading revisions to the pistol ordinance to align with federal and state law.
The Aiken Rotary Club hosted 50 service members from all states and branches in a Worldwide Thanksgiving to the Armed Forces event at Heart of Aiken restaurant. A taped segment includes Major LaMonica and MSgt. Rotz addressing attendees, with rebroadcast planned on Thanksgiving Day via the Armed Services Network to servicemen in 26 countries. The program also features the St Johns United Methodist Church choir performing Gabriel Faure Requiem.
Salley mayor Jack Able leads the fourth annual chitlin strut to raise funds for local projects. The event draws thousands for chitterlings sales with aims to fund a fire truck and Civil Defense setup in Salley, at the highway crossing near Aiken.
