The Aiken SPCA Meals for Mutts program is helping shelter animals while noting donor costs. Aiken’s renowned Thoroughbred racing figure is depicted in a mural at a New York City restaurant, linking local charity with prominent names and a calendar highlight.
Cheri Hicks and husband Randy brought Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches to Regency Hospice patients in the Aiken Augusta area after coordinating with Amy Timmerman and volunteers. Ryan's Steakhouse donated meals at a modest cost and Hicks covered any shortfall. The couple have long delivered groceries and even brought a birthday cake to a patient, aiming to make the holiday meaningful beyond watching parades and football.
Tradition continues as the Aiken Hounds bless the hunt on Thanksgiving morning with near perfect weather. Local leaders and residents praise the Hitchcock Woods and city support, noting the annual event preserves Aiken’s distinctive heritage and community spirit.
The Thanksgiving event at The Alley in downtown Aiken drew hundreds for a community dinner with turkey pumpkin pie and sunlit weather. Eddie George co-chairman says the gathering unites people from all walks of life for food and fellowship, calling it a handshake not a handout. Volunteers organized, cooked, and served while local churches supplied cross shaped tables for the display. Ellen Peeples praised the chance to share a meal with others, noting its continued success from last year.
Jim Alexander and his family joined the One Table Thanksgiving event while Mike Wells and other volunteers served pumpkin pie and dessert items. George noted 30 to 40 meals for sheriff’s office staff and 75 meals delivered to shut-ins across the county. The event included musical entertainment and drew people who have no family or cannot return home.
Aiken schedules holiday events including Holly Days in downtown each Saturday until Dec 16 with live entertainment from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Aiken Tree Lighting Ceremony is set for Friday Dec 1 at 6 p.m. in Newberry.
