NBC Wins First U.S. Interview With Gorbachev For Prime Time
NBC will air a one hour spontaneous interview with Mikhail Gorbachev in prime time on Monday. Tom Brokaw to conduct the session from Moscow. U.S. Economy Expands 4.1 Percent in Summer Growth
The Commerce Department reports 4.1 percent annualized GNP growth for July through September, boosted by consumer spending and business investment, revising the prior 3.8 percent estimate. Inflation rose 3.3 percent, energy and food costs moderated, while annual inflation earlier in the year ran higher. Corporate after tax profits rose 5.2 percent in Q3, the best since 1986.

Aiken Council Denies Horse Use Zone on Dibble Road
Two Aiken lawyers argued for and against a conditional use permit for 32 horses on a 16 acre tract north of Dibble Road. After about ninety minutes of debate the council denied the request concluding the use was inconsistent with the neighborhood. The case followed earlier rezoning discussions and the planning commission’s recommendation for a buffer barrier.

City agrees to new election system in consent decree
Aiken will adopt a new City Council election plan by February 1 after a Justice Department consent decree. The plan, possibly a 4-2-1 layout with four districts, two at large seats, and a mayor seat, must be implemented by November 1988 with a special election by November 8, 1988.
