Governor Riley pushes a one cent sales tax increase to fund broad improvements in South Carolina schools. He argues the penny will unleash the state's potential and calls for tougher standards plus programs for gifted students in a statewide televised address.
Dr Robert Paskel Aiken County School District superintendent and Rep Irene Rudnick D Aiken endorsed Gov Riley s proposal to raise education funds with a one cent sales tax They support earmarking funds for education and note improved programs higher teacher pay and regional economic benefits while cautioning on passage chances in the General Assembly
At a board meeting the Aiken County Board of Education discussed a growing up video tape program for students. Pat Dillon defended the program noting teen pregnancy drives dropouts and the need to reach preteens before first intercourse. The board will view tapes before a decision. An in school suspension program for Areas 1 3 4 and 5 was approved costing 33 750 from the Operations Contingency Fund.
The 18th Chitlin Strut mobilizes Salley with 40 000 visitors anticipated. Mayor E W Clamp proclaims Clean Up For The Strut week as Souvenirs arrive including Go Hog Wild T shirts and ceramic pigs. A talent show and beauty contest at the Salley Civic Center precede the event with a queen prize of a $50 savings bond.
Aiken police and mental health staff resolved a seven hour standoff with James A. Smith without gunfire. Smith 34 of Locke Lane resisted as 25 officers and onlookers watched. Two of his brothers and officer Johnny McKinney pulled him from the home around 7 p.m. after negotiations and a tense window exchange.
The Aiken Hounds stage the annual Blessing of the Hounds at 11 a.m. at Memorial Gate Hitchcock Woods with Monsignor George Lewis Smith officiating.
