In New York a blast ripped through four floors of the American Chicle gum plant injuring 55 workers as steel and molten gum spilled into the street. Firemen called it a miracle none of the 150 on the night shift were killed. about 25 burned severely and some with burns over 90 percent were sent to neighboring-state hospitals due to local burn facility shortages.
Patricia Hearst, 22, is back with her family in San Francisco for the first time in nearly three years. She says she plans to read best sellers, get a dog, and gain weight. She adds it feels like she never left and is settling in at her parents Nob Hill apartment as she prepares for her first court-ordered phone call to federal probation officials.
AAA reports across 3,700 outlets that regular gasoline averages 61.5 cents per gallon for the upcoming four day weekend, down from Labor Day. Premium averages 65.8 cents, unleaded 63.8 cents, and diesel 53.3 cents. The survey also notes adequate supply is expected over the long weekend.

The Aiken area is forecast for a hard freeze with temperatures dropping to the mid 20s. A cool week continues with highs in the mid 50s and breezy 15 to 20 mph winds. Rain chances are low tomorrow but may return Wednesday and Thursday.
Paul Tewkesbury drew attention by wearing a bright orange coat to church. Meanwhile South Carolina officials warn that over half a million cars remain unregistered for next year with a November 30 deadline. Environmental officials reassure residents there is no danger from fallout from a radioactive cloud that passed over South Carolina this weekend. Heywood G. Allen King of Paxson Stables reports 24 horses in Aiken with 10 yearlings and others aged up to three, aiming for the spring racing season. Pete McKenna notes 15 horses, mostly yearlings, arriving. Bramazon Farm has 14 yearlings from New York. Greentree Stables plans 36 total with nine to ten more this winter, and Gainesway Farm expects nine or ten horses.
DHEC notes lack of rain and high winds slow ground radiation while emphasizing no cause for alarm. Weekend data will be analyzed by ERDA and EPA with results due today. ERDA says not an emergency and samples are sent to headquarters for review. The cloud may linger in the upper atmosphere and possibly return over the United States.
