The eighth Aiken Fall Steeplechase at Ford Conger Field set attendance records with about 5 900 fans? up from last year’s 5 900 estimate. Fans enjoyed racing, food, socializing, and friendly wagering as U S C A I brothers gathered along the back stretch.
In a year marked by impeachment and war debates, Congress posted few major wins. Clinton earned bipartisan acquittal, while a budget agreement and banking deregulation stood as notable actions. Republicans and Democrats shifted focus to Kosovo and domestic policy battles as leadership changed in the House with Dennis Hastert taking the speaker role.
Firefighters battled a two and a half hour blaze at a home at the corner of Dibble Road and Valley Green Road Saturday night. Propane cylinders on the back porch exploded as responders arrived around 7:20 pm. The owner was away and the cause is undetermined. Lt. WB Kirkland of the Aiken Department of Public Safety said investigators have no explanation yet. Crews paused entry to the house for 20 minutes while smoke poured from doors and windows and power was disconnected.
American Legion Post 212 and the Ten Gents social club distributed 50 gift boxes with turkeys vegetables and drinks to local families in need. Chuck Smith said the effort, run annually, expanded this year by 25 boxes and aims to grow further next year as neighbors recruit names of recipients.
The Aiken County Mental Health Center hosted a Saturday yard sale to raise funds for three groups the Mental Health Association of Aiken County Tri Development Center and Aiken County Help Line. Items included a Macintosh LC II alloy wheels and a Captain Kangaroo game. Community support leaders said the event aimed to consolidate resources and avoid waste with Salvation Army pickups and United Way coordination.

A 78 year old Aiken woman was approached by two Black women who claimed to have found thousands of dollars and urged a bank withdrawal of 5000 dollars to trade for the bills. They and the victim went to the bank and back to the Winn-Dixie, where the suspects pocketed the money. Det Wendell Hall of the Aiken Department of Public Safety cautioned residents to avoid such scams and involve trusted people if approached about money.
