WSRC says no layoff plans exist and disputes Augusta radio station WGAC's report of 7000 jobs lost over 2004 and 2005. Rebecca Reardon defended the station's story when questioned, as WSRC filed a restructuring plan for DOE review last week.
Bob Pedde president of WSRC denies WGAC contact with site officials for comment or verification before the report. He says the story is inaccurate and irresponsible. WSRC spokesman Callicott says DOE has not commented on the restructuring proposal and no early retirement or layoffs can be announced.
The American Cancer Society asks smokers to put out cigarettes for 24 hours for the Great American Smokeout. Hitchcock Healthcare's Kara Flanders notes quitting often requires multiple tries and ongoing support, with a 2003 ACS report stressing tobacco addiction as a true drug dependence. The Hitchcock program reports 80 to 90 percent quit during seven sessions, with 12 months later 30 percent still abstinent. Beginning January the program will run at Medical Park Drive with behavior modification plus nicotine patch and step options.
New York unveiled eight finalist memorial designs for nearly 3000 victims of the Sept 11 attacks and the 1993 bombing. A 13 member panel selected the designs from 5201 proposals and will pick a final plan by year end. The plans include reflecting pools walls of names and a tomb for unidentified remains. Mon ica Iken spoke of hope for families as designs offer sacred peaceful reflection spaces while foreseeing potential friction in final selection.
Unveiled designs honor victims from all attack sites on September 11 2001 and the 1993 bombing. The final plan will be chosen by year end. Inversion of Light by T Sasaki features a circular skylight with blue illumination over unidentified remains. Suspending Memory by J Karadin and H Y Wu presents a large pool with two raised memorial gardens and per victim columns linked by a bridge. Lower Waters by B Campbell and M Neumann places a garden on the south footprint and a memorial on the north footprint.
A conference committee bill awaiting action in the House includes 4 million for Palmetto Parkway Phase 2 and 2 million for North Augusta riverfront extensions. Rep. Gresham Barrett notes the funding offers a start toward I 520 extensions and that TCSP and T 21 funds support local roads and rights of way. The total now available nears 40 million.
Aiken Habitat for Humanity plans three houses simultaneous builds in spring to mark the 50th home in Aiken County. Executive director Richard Church says the group will stretch beyond its current pace of four homes per year, needing more sponsors volunteers funds and planning.
