President Reagan defends his secret arms sale to Iran amid intense questioning at a news conference. He says the decision was worth the risks and notes a third country was involved. aides call the Iran arms affair the era’s gravest policy crisis for his six years in office. Senator Sam Nunn looms as potential new Senate Armed Services chairman.
Committee members cite at least seven contradictions between what top officials said and what Reagan told reporters. Senator Richard Lugar criticized Reagan for withholding from Congress word that secret negotiations had been under way for 18 months. Reagan said some advisers opposed the shipments but that Secretary of State George Shultz will remain in the Cabinet.
In Wagener a firefighting dispute led to mass resignations from the Wagener Volunteer Fire Department.
