The Ku Klux Klan is rising after a decade of decline with greater visibility and slicker public relations, according to the Anti-Defamation League. About 8,000 members across three major factions, up from 6,500 in 1975, are now tracked by ADL researchers.
A cold front moved out of the East bringing clearing skies after showers and thundershowers. Isolated severe storms toppled trees near Jewett City Connecticut while Latrobe Pennsylvania recorded 69 mph gusts and Newark New Jersey saw large hail.
Christina Grainger, a 59 year old Dublin housekeeper, spent eight days in Iowa with 250 fellow Dubliners on a Friendship Force visit. North Carolina lung expert Dr. Ross L. McLean testified that William Bumgardner, 50, of Arden, has a moderately severe chronic bronchitis with only a slight case of asbestosis. He said chest x rays show no progression of asbestosis in three years and that obstructive lung defects align with bronchitis, not asbestosis. Bumgardner sues seven asbestos product firms claiming lung disease from insulation work.
John Irwin of the U S Forestry at the Savannah River Plant says residents can obtain four to five cords of free firewood from the 6 000 acre national forest near the SRP. Wood must be ground or dead and a free permit is required for home use only.
