Aiken County Council, after an executive session, approved a 685000 budget amendment to raise salaries for employees effective the first full January payroll. The council also adjusted holiday pay for staff, removed certain budget items, and funded other items including a 165100 payment in lieu to the school district and funds for the Horse Creek Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrade. The panel also authorized a land transfer deal for the Seminole Mill site pending terms.
Elaine Burgos, a retiree from Aiken, received a car donated anonymously after Jamie Johnson of Crescent Automotive learned a donor would pay for a vehicle. Burgos, who faced transportation issues, arrived unsure but joyful upon learning she would get a car. Johnson praised the donor and stressed acts of kindness amid contentious times.
Aiken County Public Schools General Counsel William Burkhalter swore in Ahmed Samaha the new District 9 member and returning members Tad Barber District 8 Ronnie West District 1. Keith Liner District 4 will be sworn in later. Policy changes approved on final and first readings cover funding grants admissions and charter school rules.
