Pretrial Intervention Cuts Court Lead in South Carolina
The South Carolina General Assembly supports a pretrial intervention program for non violent first offenders in the Second Judicial Circuit including Aiken Barnwell and Bamberg counties. Eligible youths 17 or older may avoid court by completing eight weeks of counseling restitution and meetings, with a $200 enrollment fee and potential destruction of arrest records upon success.

Tom McElmurray Named Top Conservationist
Thomas W. McElmurray received the Outstanding Conservationist of the Year award at the Aiken County Soil and Water Conservation District banquet. He was honored for soil stewardship including 500 acres conserved, 2.5 miles of terraces, livestock waste treatment ponds, grassed waterways and improved grazing with watering facilities. McElmurray also earned the Edisto-Savannah Valley area's top conservationist award for 1981 and serves on multiple farm and peanut boards.

Belvedere Fun Festival Draws Nearly Ten Thousand
Belvedere hosts its first Fall Fun Festival drawing almost 10 000 people under clear skies. Organizer Lillian Samonsky speaks of learning from mistakes and plans to repeat next year. Craftsmen from Florence Trenton Hephzibah New Ellenton Aiken and Langley attracted visitors. A variety show crowned Debbie Schuster Miss Teen Age Belvedere with runners up Hope Litchfield and Lisa Hamerick. The day also featured woodcraftsman booths and a Busy weekend for locals.
