European and Japanese manufacturers race to design a mass throwaway car with a one year life. Antonio Gottardi of Turin cites a 9000 mile life and a $400 price. Volkswagen in Wolfsburg and Toyota in Japan have prototypes. show debut planned for New York next spring with market entry around 1975.
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson and wife visited the fifth floor designer salon at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York where Johnson evaluated several outfits for Mrs. Johnson. The 500 production workers at General Tire & Rubber Co in Charlotte walked out for higher pay. Randall Blue of United Rubber Workers Local 850 said the contract expired Sept 10 and wage freezes ended last Sunday. The union seeks 30 cents more per hour first year and 26 cents more in the next two years, while the company offers 5.5 percent under Phase 2 Pay Board guidelines.
Rudolf Abel, the top Soviet agent in the United States, died Monday in Moscow. Abel operated from 1948 until his 1957 arrest, was sentenced to 30 years, and was exchanged in 1962 for U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers.
O Hare International Airport remains the nation's busiest with 641 390 aircraft operations in 1970 down from 676 473 in 1969. Van Nuys Airport moved into second place with 575 784 operations while Los Angeles and Kennedy slipped in the rankings to third and 14th respectively.

SPARTANBURG AP A NEA preliminary probe into South Carolina educational conditions drew blowback from the Greater Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce. In a letter to SCEA leaders the chamber warned of potential sanctions against the state by the teachers group and urged opposition to the study. The NEA team visited about 24 schools across the Lowcountry Midlands and western areas, selecting sites labeled educationally deficient. The investigation extends to a Wednesday news conference at SCEA headquarters in Columbia and follows a dispute over teacher pay where the legislature granted a $300 hike vs the requested $1,500 statewide average.
