Phase three plan to expand Aiken County Animal Shelter

The Aiken County Animal Shelter seeks a 5,000 square foot expansion funded by a $1 million allocation from round three of the 1-cent capital projects sales tax. The facility now houses up to 200 animals with 100 capacity and faces daily intake of over 500 animals. Sixteen kennels hold adoptable dogs, but overcrowding persists with three dogs per kennel common. The cat area expanded this year, yet cages fill remaining rooms. Euthanasia rates remain high at 86 percent, prompting calls for a larger shelter and new surgery room.
