DOE orders MOX plant design upgrades at Savannah River Site
Upgrades to the Mixed Oxide Fuel Facility design at Savannah River Site will not delay the project or raise costs, DOE states. The changes, ordered Nov 3 to Duke Cogema Stone & Webster, aim to boost safety as the plant would convert weapons-grade plutonium into reactor fuel, with an operational target of 2009. Critics warn of delays and higher taxpayer costs, while DOE and project officials say impacts are minimal and within budget.
