The Department of Juvenile Justice notes a rise in juvenile crime in Aiken County with 50 cases from July 1991 to June 1992 rising to 107 from July 1992 to June 1993, a 114 percent increase. Juvenile investigator Becky Edmonds cites more violent acts and more incidents at schools, urging stronger laws and reevaluation of handling juvenile crime.
Irene Trowell Harris, once laughed at by peers when she wished to teach aboard planes, became the first African American woman general in Army and Air Force National Guard history. The 30 year nursing career, culminating as Air National Guard nursing assistant to the director of nursing services at Bolling AFB, was celebrated at a Pentagon pinning ceremony. Her Windsor mother Irene Trowell expressed immense pride at the milestone reached through education and perseverance.
Aiken County residents show broad backing for NAFTA with 36 percent in favor and 24 percent opposed. Strong supporters edge out strong opponents 12 to 10 percent, while moderates lead opponents nearly two to one at 23 to 14 percent. Dr. Botsch notes many had not considered the proposal yet.

Kassie Keogh leads the Jamil Temple Fall Ceremonial parade downtown Aiken atop an antique firetruck. Shrine clubs from across the region march with go-karts clowns and a color guard while supporters say they do it for the children. About 120 Shrine members joined the event which began at Park Avenue and Union Street.
