Chestnut Trees in Cherokee History and Legacy
Legend says the Cherokee favored chestnut groves for villages and used fire to manage stands. Chestnuts fueled demand across the United States as railroad cars shipped large nuts to cities for roasting by vendors. The nuts fed wildlife and livestock, with forests hosting trees up to 600 years old and some 8 to 10 feet in diameter. By 1950 the trees were essentially eliminated, though roots survive and sprouts can reach 20 feet tall and over six feet in diameter before dying.
