Aiken Standard reports that impending cold weather and the energy crisis have sparked rumors of shortages in gasoline fuel oil coal firewood and wood-burning stoves across North Augusta Aiken New Ellenton and Horse Creek Valley with at least one business confirming a new illicit market concern.
Leavelle McCampbell High School’s Graniteville Rock Band placed second at Saturday’s state contest held at Columbia Airport School. Rotary guests include Mike Hennelly and Robert F. Busbee with Ted Willis new member. VFW appoints James L. McNeal as National Aide-de-Camp for 1973-74, amid the organization’s 75th anniversary. Driver sleepiness linked to 25 percent of accidents and up to half of fatal crashes. Bank plans a new time and temperature sign.
The Senate Watergate committee voted 5 to 1 to ask President Nixon for an immediate meeting to question him on Watergate matters. The panel also requests release of all tape recordings and documents relevant to the investigation.
Kissinger, at a dinner for Premier Chou En Lai, assures China of lasting U.S. friendship regardless of future events and administration changes. Chou says he will not visit the United States until Washington ends relations with Taiwan's Nationalist regime.
U N peacekeeping chief in the Middle East travels to Suez to resolve a traffic control roadblock on the Cairo Suez highway inside Israeli lines. Israel claims control of the checkpoint where the cease fire line crosses the road and dismantles a U N roadblock, while Cairo newspaper Al Ahram says Israel wants to keep forces along the highway to Suez and Egypt opposes this interpretation of the cease fire.
The House approved a bill to authorize the Alaska pipeline by 361 to 14. The measure is expected to face little resistance in the Senate, with action planned for today.
Three new city councilmen were inducted at the last night meeting. William Clyburn Hastings Wyman and Frampton Durban were declared duly elected. Wyman won reelection November 6 for a second term while Durban and Clyburn began their first terms. Clyburn is a Democrat Wyman and Durban Republicans.
Sam Wheeler Jr of Gloverville won this week's football contest with only one miss. Runners up included Leroy Eidson Curtis Storey and Joan Prinzbach. City Council adopted sewer pumping station bids annexed Woodside Village and honored Julson Fulmer. Windham outlined fuel cuts and thermostats set to 65 degrees as city trims energy use.
Patrick L. Baughman, Wagener businessman and president of the South Carolina State Baptist Convention, urged delegates to place priorities in perspective and addressed finances, salaries, juvenile rehabilitation, and unity. More than 2,000 delegates from about 1,600 churches gathered as Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter and Leighton Ford spoke, with a proposed record budget of 6.3 million dollars, up 325 thousand from the current year.
The forecast calls for a warmer day today and tomorrow with highs in the lower 70s and nights in the lower 40s. Friday could bring showers with highs near 77 and lows around 50. Saturday should be fair and cooler with highs in the 60s.
The Senate Interior Committee approved a bill empowering the President to impose emergency fuel-saving measures. The legislation would authorize rationing of gasoline and home heating oil and is expected to go to the Senate floor on Wednesday.
The black wife of a white man abducted with 11 men in a racial incident refuses to guide officers to the assailants. Brian Barfield, 33, is hospitalized seriously at Holy Cross Hospital. Jeraldine Barfield, 26, was not harmed. Police say she is frightened or unwilling to help identify the attackers.

The program helps families stay together during crises and can act as substitute parental support for children when parents are ill deserted or separated. Most cases resolve in days but some need extended care. Homemakers work weekdays to 830.
