A Darlington man James Gandy 59 died in a hit and run on a secondary road near U S 52 around 6 15 p m Sunday, raising South Carolina weekend traffic fatalities to two. A 51 year old Lee County man died in a Saturday accident.

A military jury of two black and five white officers begins deliberations on Pvt Billy Dean Smith accused of using a fragmentation grenade to kill two Army lieutenants in a Vietnam era fragging case. The trial marks the first U S court martial on such charges. The presiding judge Col Rawls H Frazier prepared final instructions before the jury.
During the trial proceedings, the judge stated that Smith could not be sentenced to death. The deliberations will occur only during normal work hours. The trial began on September 6 with Judge Frazier presiding.
