Groundbreaking for Savannah River DWPF marks start of waste facility
On November 8 1983 officials including South Carolina Governor Richard Riley and U S Representative Butler Derrick attended the ceremony as land was officially broken for the U S Department of Energy Defense Waste Processing Facility at the Savannah River Site. The plant will vitrify liquid nuclear waste into solid glass for long term storage with Washington Savannah River Co a URS Corp subsidiary operating the contract.
