Yarn Plant to Add 150 Jobs in Edgefield

Stereoknit Fabrics, a Delta Woodside Industries division, will build a 38 million yarn plant in Edgefield to replace an older facility. The project aims to hire 87 in phase one by July 1992 and total 150 after phase two a year later, producing poly cotton and extra fine rotor spun yarn at 300 000 square feet.

City Holds Langley Pond Cleanup Position Unchanged

Aiken City Council reviewed calls to revise its stance on Langley Pond cleanup. City officials reiterated that the city did not contribute to the pond’s problems and will issue a formal position statement after the attorney drafts it. The plan favors letting sediments remain rather than a 16 to 18 million dollar cleanup with ongoing 8 million post maintenance costs, with total project costs potentially exceeding 100 million.

Home composting pilot eyed to cut trash costs

Aiken City Council unanimously approved a $5,000 program to start home composting. Residents can buy compost bins for 12.50 inside city limits and 25 in the county, with the city covering half of in city costs. Current yard trash disposal runs 28 per ton and could drop toward 1 per ton if demand grows.

Ex Chief Justice Julius Ness Dies at 75 in Bamberg

Julius Bubba Ness, former South Carolina Chief Justice, died in Bamberg at 75 after months of cancer. Elected to the Supreme Court in 1974, he served as chief justice from 1985 to 1988, later teaching at USC Law School. He is buried at Bamberg Memory Gardens.

Schools Weigh AIDS Policy At Aiken District Meeting

The Aiken County School Board will review a state backed policy allowing children with AIDS or HIV to attend school unless medical or behavioral issues create a hazard. Current policy required multiple doctors to clear attendance. If risk remains, alternative schooling is offered.

Arrests Break Up $50 000 Theft Ring

Four adults and two juveniles were arrested over the weekend, with over $50,000 in stolen merchandise recovered. Police tracked much of the goods to a Warrenville trailer where the leader, a 15-year-old boy, and his 13-year-old girlfriend were on the run. Weapons were among the recovered items. The thefts occurred in the prior two to three weeks.
