Aiken resident John Allen Copeland, 20, was arrested by the Aiken Department of Public Safety for discharging a firearm and related offenses after an anonymous call. Officers pursued a group near McCormick Street and Abbeville Avenue, recovering a .22 caliber pistol and ammunition. three others were not charged.

Unofficial Oregon results show Al Gore with a narrow lead of 3,973 over George Bush as 99 percent of votes counted. A large ballot discrepancy in Bernalillo County and about 1,600 damaged ballots counted by hand raise concerns of tampering. Recount possible if margin dips under about 2,800 votes. Ralph Nader tallies 74,156.
