Veterans Day Ceremony in Aiken to Include Wreath Laying

The Aiken chapter of the Marine Corps League will sponsor its second annual Veterans Day ceremony today at the veterans monument on Laurens Street. The event starts at 5:30 pm with Barbara Rollins performing patriotic music and ends with a speech by chaplain Jesse Goldman. Wreath is laid by Peter Cosgriff and Dennis Giddings, with participation from Marine Reserve from Augusta and Boy Scout Troop 110 and taps by Ed Carnes. Leo Passmore will hoist the colors, and representatives from all service branches will attend.

WWII veteran Alex Leslo flies B 17 to Sweden then to Germany

Admiral of the skies, 23 year old Alex Leslo, a WWII veteran, ferried a four engine B 17 across the Atlantic to Sweden for armor fitting then back to Germany. He informed fiance Helena of his enlistment a year earlier and trained to fly the war bird with top and rear machine guns. On May 12 1944 a fire erupted in the right inside engine during a combat mission, prompting him to recall fire safety briefings before deciding next steps.

Truck driver killed in one vehicle crash

Ridgeland truck driver Christoper Smith, 30, died when his tractor trailer overturned near Silver Bluff High School after failing to stop at a stop sign during a detour on Desoto Drive. Investigators cite heavy load and possible mechanical factors. Smith drove a truck registered to William Cannington of Barnesville.

NORTH CHARLESTON Republican Jim White, a 60 year old Hanahan importer, announced his candidacy for State Education Superintendent challenging Barbara Nielsen. Nielsen has not yet decided on a third term. White says his outside stance and lack of Ed degree are advantages and promotes a common sense approach.

Thanksgiving Community Dinner at North Airicn Baptist Church

State budget may reach five billion in coming year

South Carolina faces a near five billion dollar outlook for fiscal 1999 as the Board of Economic Advisers projects about 367 million in new funds after allocating over 300 million in new money plus roughly 60 million from the present year.
