Wal-Mart Expansion in Aiken Moves Forward

The planning commission unanimously approved annexing a 25.09 acre tract behind Arby’s on Whiskey Road for a 135000 square foot Wal-Mart store. Commissioners Sears and McGhee did not participate due to conflicts of interest and absence. The existing Aiken store is 83427 square feet and the new facility aims to become the sole occupant of the tract.

Campbell Sees Fewer Cuts as Budget Outlook Improves

Gov. Carroll Campbell said the fiscal picture is better than last year as the Budget and Control Board began work on a 1998 budget that could total at least 3.58 billion. Revenue growth is projected at 0.4 percent, limiting agency requests for extra funds. Campbell ruled out tax increases but left open other revenue options.

Manhunt after speeding chase ends with two in custody

A speeding Plymouth Reliant led to a Tuesday morning pursuit in Aiken. Officers blocked University bypass and Hwy 19 as two suspects fled on foot. a female passenger was caught after a 25 minute chase. Calvin Staley Jr. and Ogesta Shen were charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
