New Ellenton resident Earl S. Tanner reflects on World War I service as a mechanic on a five man YP boat off the Florida to South Carolina coast. The crew spotted subs at night using depth charges and relied on blimps and airplanes by day. He recalls limited effectiveness, moonlit patrols, and efforts to deter subs from sinking ships and depriving coastal communities of food and fuel.
