Alaska storm drives frigid air into mainland United States
A massive storm once fueled by Typhoon Nuri weakened in Alaska but anchors a pattern that will push Arctic air from the northern plains into the central United States. Tem peratures may plunge 20 to 40 degrees below average with snow possible in the northern high plains and upper Great Lakes. Snow totals near a foot in Minnesota and Wisconsin and up to two feet in Michigan's upper peninsula are forecast as winds gust to around 96 mph on Shemya Island.
