Martha Huff Gallman remembered as the telegram announcing her husband William A. Gallman Sr was wounded at St Lo. Bill Gallman, a district superintendent, helped honor his father with a memorial brick in East Richland Avenue park as the Aiken County Veterans Coalition marks Armistice Day with a ceremony for living and dead veterans.
Martha Gallman, 79, moved from her Pacolet Mills farm to an assisted living center in Aiken this weekend. She raised a child as a nurse, later wrote nursing center programs, and carried memories of her husband killed in action overseas. Her family previously lived in Indiana before returning to Greenville County. Gallman recalls her father serving as an officer.
Aiken County holds a Wednesday 10 30 a m park dedication at Richland Avenue East next to the Agricultural Services Building. The Veterans Day ceremony features a four jet flyover and bricks sales fund park additions with 1500 already placed and 8500 remaining. Engraved bricks cost 100 for two lines and 50 for one line.

Rep. James Roland Smith of Langley resigns as chair of the eight member Aiken County Legislative Delegation citing increased duties in the state legislature. He will not promote a successor. The delegation includes Sens Greg Ryberg and Nikki Setzler and Reps Bill Clyburn Scott Beck Charles Sharpe Rudy Mason and others.
Roland Smith said he took the chairmanship to promote harmony within the delegation and to be fair to all sides. He asserts he is not promoting anyone for the job.
The Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch, with the Goodyear family, pulled a plan to add on to Rye Patch. They said the expansion conflicted with the Goodyears original intent when they donated the property for public enjoyment in its present grounds. Beth Newburn, president, wrote to Parks Director Terry Rhinehart stating renovations should be limited to repairs of the current structure. The proposed area included six back bedrooms once servant quarters. City Council voted to delete the expansion proposal.
The Aiken General Aviation Commission recommends the city pay 50 000 for 10 000 square feet of land within the lease area controlled by Zipper Robbins FBO. The property includes the airport parking area and adjoins the current terminal building on the north side. The move aims to resolve a stalled terminal building plan and moves the city to own land it already has under lease.
North Augusta Mayor Lark Jones says Bell Atlantic Mobile sues North Augusta and about 100 municipalities seeking Supreme Court review to define gross revenue fees versus sales taxes. The case questions whether mobile unit fees of 3 percent on gross revenues are a tax outside local authority.
