Expertise Of SRP Celebrated
National and Du Pont officials joined lawmakers to break ground on the 910 million Defense Waste Processing Facility at the Savannah River Plant. Sen Thurmond, though detained, sent a telegram praising the project which will immobilize SRP’s 30 million gallons of high level nuclear waste into glass and create 2 100 construction jobs and 325 on site staff when operational in 1989. Governor Riley lauded the move as a landmark in defense waste disposal.
